Sudan, Africa’s biggest country, is bracing itself for two events which will have a seismic impact on its future, for better or for worse. The first is the national presidential and legislative elections scheduled for next month (April) and the second will follow shortly after, in 2011, when the South will hold a referendum to decide whether to remain as part of a unified Sudan or to opt for independence. Both events are full of opportunities as well as hazards in equal measure. Whatever the outcome, the impact, politically, socially and economically not only for Sudan itself but also for a very large chunk of Africa surrounding the country, will be profound.
